If you follow us on Twitter, you might have realised that we’ll be going around the country teaching beginner map reading skills, hosted by Cotswold Outdoor stores.

The workshops are designed for beginners who are unfamiliar with map reading and compass navigation. What we want to achieve with the workshops is to make enjoying the great outdoors through the use of one of our maps more accessible.

With the recent launch of the Wales Coast Path, giving you some 870 miles to walk around outstanding landscape from Chester to Chepstow, there’s never been a better time to brush up on your map skills and get outdoors. Perhaps our beginner map reading workshops will encourage you to your feet to explore the great outdoors that Britain has to offer. On the day you’ll be taken through the basics of paper map reading and compass navigation from understanding map symbols, taking grid references and reading compass bearings.

The schedule for the workshops is:

  • 30 May – Chester
  • 6 June – Tunbridge Wells
  • 12 June – Brecon
  • 13 June – Bournemouth, Bridgemere and Norwich
  • 14 June – Cardiff Talbot Green
