Five autumn walking festivals

Although many of the walking festival’s around Great Britain take place during the spring and early summer, there are still a good number for you to get involved in over the next couple of months too. We thought we’d do a quick round up of five autumn walking events to give you some inspiration for your next trip – or even a staycation?

Celebrating their 20th walking festival, the Haltwhistle Walking Festival runs from 6–14 October. They’re running 19 walks in total, ranging from 5–12 miles in the lovely Northumberland countryside, so there should be something to suit everyone.  Walks do need to be booked in advance, costs vary from walk to walk and spaces are limited, so do check the website in advance.

The Monmouthshire Walking Festival takes place 19–28 October, offering 30 walks covering the length and breadth of Monmouthshire. As well as having at least one serious walk each day there are shorter walks covering a range of special interest walks and events. All walks and events are ticketed and you can reserve a place online or at any of the Monmouthshire Tourist Information offices.

Heading south, the Fal River Walking Festival runs from 19 October to 4 November. In its second year the walks cover historical points of interest, the beautiful Cornish coast paths, areas of outstanding natural beauty and world heritage sites. There are a range of guided and self-guided walks to suit all abilities, visit their website for more details.

Bollington Walking Festival celebrates the best of Cheshire’s Peak District. Taking place from 20–28 October, with over 25 guided walks ranging up to 16 miles, there is something for everyone – including children during their half-term break. For the first time there is a geocaching walk included, as well as art walks, brewery tours and much more.

Finally, the Isle of Wight Walking Festival runs its autumn walking weekend from 26–29 October. There are over 60 walks in their programme with something to suit all ages and abilities.  Visit their website to request a programme and get involved.
