Have you downloaded our OS MapFinder app yet?

By , 8, February, 2013 8:00 am

Our first official mapping app from Ordnance Survey, OS MapFinder is proving popular as we’ve clocked up around 50,000 downloads in the first month. Our iOS app includes free overview mapping and you can then buy more detailed 1:25 000 and 1:50 000 mapping in handy 100km2 tiles. Not only that, our mapping will be updated for free for the lifetime of the app*, meaning you will be able to access the most up-to-date mapping on your mobile devices.

And taking advantage of OS MapFinder’s features, since its launch on 10 January 2013, over 175, 000 trips and routes have been planned across walking, running and cycling in the great outdoors. Tiles of OS Explorer mapping at 1:25 000 have proved most popular, with the Lake District and Peak District areas being most downloaded.

If you haven’t tried out our app yet, watch our new video to find out more – and if you like what you see, start downloading from the App Store! If you’d love to try out our app, but are an Android user, we’re working on the Android app for release later this year – watch this space.

And our app isn’t just on our own video either – OS MapFinder has just featured in a guide to planning an adventure on HelloTV too. You can check it out here http://videos.helloonline.com/travel/watch/planning-an-adventure/2132353014001

* Tile uploads will be free for the life of the application or until 31st March 2016 (whichever is longer).  Updates occur bi-annually as Ordnance Survey updates its mapping.

When are you planning to add Windows 8??

    • Gemma says:

      Hi Max
Our developers are currently working on version two of our iOS app and an Android version. We’ll let you know about any further versions and development plans via our blog and Twitter, so keep watching this space.
      Thanks, Gemma

    Hi,

I have tried to download the app, but it says “not available in UK store”. This is from the links on this page, and a separate app store search for OS mapfinder. I would really like to take advantage of the Easter discount. Help!

    • Melanie says:

Hi Justin, We had planned an upgrade tot he app, but when it was deployed we discovered a few bugs. So, we made the decision to pull it while they are fixed. We hope it will be live again in the next couple of days. The discount will be available for the whole of April, so you should have plenty of time to make the most of it! Best wishes,

Downloaded the app last week version 1.1 and bought some maps
Updated to version 1.2 which worked on my iPhone but froze on the iPad
Deleted the iPad app but now cannot find it on the app store
    Help

    • Melanie says:

      Hi Richard,
Thanks for your message. after we upgraded we discovered some significant bugs and so have pulled it from the app store while they are fixed. We hope to have the updated version live and available again in the next few days.

What’s going on here? I’ve paid money for several OS Mapfinder tiles. Then you dropped the price (thanks!) and I bought a couple more: then it stopped working altogether.

So I deleted the app with the intention of re-installing it – and it’s disappeared from the Apple AppStore altogether.

    Not chuffed at all.

    • Melanie says:

      Hi Nick,
We had been ready to upgrade the app to add more functionality (sharing of routes etc) but when it went live we discovered a few bugs. It’s been withdrawn while we fix the bugs, but expect it to be live again on iTunes in the next couple of days. We are really disappointed and annoyed too, but you will get all the tiles you purchased back when you re install it and the price reduction will continue until the end of April. Hope that helps,

It has been more than a couple of days now and the app is still frozen, when will it be fixed I had paid for the maps to use over the easter holidays and cannot use it at all, not happy

    • Gemma says:

      Hi Joe
We’re really sorry it’s been causing you a problem, we’re waiting for the App Store to approve the app and get it live again, we will update Twitter and Facebook as soon as the app is back up and running.
      Thanks, Gemma

    Hi

I emailed the OS Mapfinder customer support team but after several days, there has been no response.

    1. How do you EDIT the type of route once the route has been created / saved? The walk, run, cycle icons cannot be clicked on (in either iPad or iPhone versions).

    2. Is there a problem with iCloud syncing? I had 2 routes stored on my iPhone and 1 on my iPad. I turned iCloud syncing on for both devices then synchronised with my iPhone then with my iPad however all routes (planned and recorded) were deleted (FYI the two devices are linked on the same iTunes account and other apps sync fine). My iPhone is now empty of routes and my iPad, despite showing no routes in the ALL section still shows a phantom route in the map viewer (in the small map viewer window above the routes list).

    Any ideas? Thanks

Is there a user manual for MapFinder?
I can’t find a solution to my problem in the FAQs.

    Many Thanks
    Helen

    • Gemma says:

      Hi Helen

Thanks for the questions. There is no manual for OS MapFinder, so if you can’t find an answer on FAQs, the best thing to do is visit the Help & Support section of the app. You’ll find extra details there, including the details for our excellent Customer Services team who are best placed to talk you through your queries. You can call on 0845 456 0420 and they’re available Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.

      Many thanks

How do you name uploaded routes? And how do you change the route type?
I uploaded 3 .gpx maps from Action Medical Research – http://www.action.org.uk/suffolk_sunrise_100
These are their 3 routes for their bike ride in Suffolk on 12th May.
The first challenge was that when you select Menu, Routes the 3 routes all look the same.
After some time playing around I discovered that you can name the routes by selecting the circled right arrow in each route box and in the next page selecting edit (top right) and then putting a name in to the top box and pressing done (top left). You can also enter a description, but unfortunately don’t seem to be able to change the route type (it seems to be set for walking and I want it set for cycle). How do you do this?
I am sorry about this as I think I’ll have a number of posts in quick succession as I have a number of problems!
    Many Thanks
    Helen

    How do you review routes?
Again after some playing around I discovered that if you select Follow for a route and select Start when the Location Found/Do you wish to start recording? box appears and then move to where your route is (it was way off of my screen as the map was centred on my location and I hadn’t realised this, OK now I know, but I would have thought that the route you select should be on your screen initially!). Then to get out of reviewing this you seem to have to press the stop box, select Save from the Stop Recording menu and then select Discard from the Save Trip menu, then Delete from the Discard Route menu. All seems a bit long winded and I’m sure there must be a simpler way!
    Please help!
    Thanks

    How do you overlay routes?
I uploaded 3 .gpx maps from Action Medical Research – http://www.action.org.uk/suffolk_sunrise_100
These are their 3 routes for their bike ride in Suffolk on 12th May.
I’ve named the 3 routes and would like to overlay them so that I can see where the route splits are. Is this possible?
    Many Thanks

    Hello,

I have purchased a number of map tiles for your app on ipad. After the upgrade it has completely stopped working. It just freezes on the initial splash screen. I am loathe to deinstall as I do not want to loose my tiles and routes. Can you please indicate when you intend to remedy this problem on ipad running iOS 6.1.3?

    • Gemma says:

      Hi Dave

Sorry to hear you’re having problems. We have had a handful of queries on this, the first thing to try is a hard close of the app and then opening it again. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, then deleting the app and reinstalling it and then syncing to restore your map purchases will work. However, if you have any saved routes, you will lose them if you do this. Once this has been carried out and you have the new version, routes will then be able to be synced with the iCloud and shared via social media channels as well as the ability to import and export gpx routes.
If you would like to talk to someone about this or be talked through any options, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0845 456 0420 and they will be happy to help.
      Thanks, Gemma
