Our map-reading workshops proved popular at the Hay Festival recently and out team working on the stand handing out hundreds of copies of our free map-reading leaflets too. If you didn’t make it to Hay this year, did you know we also run a series of free map-reading workshops with Cotswold Outdoor stores?

Navigating your way around is an essential skill for any explorer or outdoor enthusiast and being able to confidently use a map is a vital skill which everyone should have before setting off on an outdoors adventure. This applies whether you are using a traditional paper map, an app or GPS device or any other online tools; being able to read a map could get you out of serious trouble as well as saving your life.

The workshops are free to attend and are delivered by Ordnance Survey experts. They are aimed at beginners and seek to provide attendees with the confidence to enjoy exploring the outdoors. The event will take attendees through basic map reading skills including mapping and compass reading. All participants will also receive 25% off any Ordnance Survey maps purchased on the day. We’ve been running sessions for the last couple of months, but there are still dates in June and July for you to attend.

Workshops will begin promptly at 6.30 pm, lasting for one hour. This will be followed by an opportunity to speak to the experts and browse the store. Tickets are free and can be picked up or reserved over the phone at the store. Tickets are limited so please get organised and book in advance to secure your space. Check your local store for details or online here for the list of dates and venues.

If you follow us on Twitter, you might have realised that we’ll be going around the country teaching beginner map reading skills, hosted by Cotswold Outdoor stores.

The workshops are designed for beginners who are unfamiliar with map reading and compass navigation. What we want to achieve with the workshops is to make enjoying the great outdoors through the use of one of our maps more accessible.

With the recent launch of the Wales Coast Path, giving you some 870 miles to walk around outstanding landscape from Chester to Chepstow, there’s never been a better time to brush up on your map skills and get outdoors. Perhaps our beginner map reading workshops will encourage you to your feet to explore the great outdoors that Britain has to offer. On the day you’ll be taken through the basics of paper map reading and compass navigation from understanding map symbols, taking grid references and reading compass bearings.
